Hebrews: What will probably be in the test
- You need to be able to reproduce the brief outline below.
- You dont have to remember the chapter and verse
- You dont have to have full titles, as long as you get the meaning
- The easiest way to remember it is to remember the symmetry
- You have to do this part of the test without your Bibles!!!
- You need to be able to sum up the core message of Hebrews in less than half a page
Be prepared to answer the following questions:
- Who wrote it?
- Is it an epistle or some other kind of writing?
- What was the society like in which the church was situated?
- What does it mean to enter Gods rest?
- Should we still obey the command to rest on the Sabbath day?
- How could Jesus learn obedience if he is God?
- Why did Jesus need to go through the experience of human weakness?
- Who was Melchizedek and why is he mentioned?
- What are the four points of the New Covenant?
- Explain Heb 6:4-6
- Heb 6:9 Why is the writer convinced that those he is writing to are truly saved?
- Describe the new sanctuary
- What is the purpose of the long list of names in chapter 11?
- How does God discipline us (12:1-13)?
Brief Outline:
- Introduction: Gods Son has now received glory and power [1:1-4]
- Message 1: Jesus is exalted, hold fast to him, he will have mercy on you [1:5-5:10]
- Christ: above the angels, our pioneer [1:5-18]
- Christ: faithfulness (but unbelief of Israel) [3:1-5:10]
- Christ: merciful & compassionate [4:15-5:10]
- First warning against falling away & encouragement [5:11-6:12]
- First summary [6:13-20]
- Message 2: The basis of our hope [7:1-10:18]
- Christthe new high priest [7:1-28]
- Christthe new tabernacle, minister of a new covenant [8:1-9:24]
- Christthe new offering [9:25-10:18]
- Second summary [10:19-25]
- Second warning against falling away & encouragement [10:26-39]
- Message 3: All the heroes of faith are cheering you on, so run the race! [11:1-13:19]
- Examples of faith [11:1-40]
- If you persevere in following Jesus, you will! [12:1-13]
- following Jesus [12:14-13:19]
- Blessing & conclusion [13:20-25]
